You be the judge!  Finalists for the July 25 Rum Scrum Cocktail and Culinary Contest are announced, cocktails and recipes included below. Presented by Deep Island Hawaiian Rum (sister spirit of OCEAN Organic Vodka) and Westin Ka’anapali Ocean Resort Villas, the event will feature and benefit Maui Culinary Academy.

Jacob Caracheo’s Maui-Melon-Jito

2 oz. Deep Island Hawaiian Rum
2 oz. Govinda’s Fresh Squeezed Watermelon Juice
¾ oz. Govinda’s Fresh Squeezed Lime Juice
¾ oz. House-Made Simple Syrup
Shake vigorously. Serve in a snifter neat with a splash of soda. Garnish with mint sprig.

James Shoemaker’s Flower of the Cane

1 oz. Deep Island Hawaiian Rum
½ oz. Kahlua Liqueur
½ oz. Taylor Falernum
1/2 Lime
Scrappy’s Chocolate Bitters

Squeeze the juice of half a lime into a shaker and place the lime half into an old fashion glass. Add a splash of bitters to the glass and allow to rest. In cocktail shaker add ice, Deep Island Hawaiian Rum, Falernum and Kahlua. Shake vigorously and pour contents into glass with lime and bitters.

Ka’ai Fong’s Sokyrka  (Soo-Kayr-Ka)

2 oz. Deep Island Hawaiian Rum
1 oz. Macadamia Nut Orgeat (Orgeat Works LTD)
¾ oz. Fresh Lemon Juice (Simpli-Fresh Farms)
½ oz. Fresh Liliko’i or Purée (friend’s yard)
10-15 Leaves of Fresh Mint (Evonuk Farms)
Garnish – Mint Sprig(s)
Muddle mint into Macadamia Nut Orgeat in a shaker making a mint infused Orgeat. Add rest of ingredients into shaker with ice. Shake to get proper dilution and chill on cocktail. Fine strain contents into glass over fresh ice. Garnish with mint sprig(s).

Gabe Harvey’s Maika’i

1½ oz. Deep Island Hawaiian Rum
½ oz. Orange Curacao
¾ oz. Fresh Pressed Liliko’i Juice
¾ oz. Fresh Pressed Lime Juice
1½ oz. Homemade Coconut Orgeat Syrup

In a shaker add the rum, lime juice and homemade coconut orgeat syrup. Add ice and shake vigorously. Set aside. Pour the liliko’i juice to the bottom of the rocks glass. Add crushed ice slowly not to mix the liliko’i juice around. Strain ingredients over crushed ice. Top off glass with additional crushed ice. Garnish with lime wedge and fresh coconut.

Tickets on sale now for Deep Island Hawaiian Rum’s “Rum Scrum Cocktail Contest” at The Westin Kā‘anapali Ocean Resort Villas  

Deep Island Hawaiian Rum, in partnership with The Westin Kā‘anapali Ocean Resort Villas, present the Rum Scrum Cocktail and Culinary Contest, which benefits Maui Culinary Academy.

The contest, which is themed to find the quintessential Hawaiian rum cocktail, will take place LIVE on Saturday, July 25 at 5:00 p.m. (VIP) and 6:00 p.m. (general admission) at Pūlehu, an Italian Grill.

Following the cocktail contest, three local, celebrity chefs including Lyndon Honda of Laulima Events, Alvin Savella of Pūlehu, an Italian Grill and Greg Gaspar of Black Rock Kitchen will work with teams of students from the Maui Culinary Academy in a “Culinary Rum Scrum” to design a distinctive dish featuring Deep Island Hawaiian Rum.

Rum Scrum Cocktail Contest general admission and VIP tickets are on sale now for $50.00 and $65.00. In addition, general admission tickets will be available for $65.00 at the door.
